In Dulci Jubilo

For concert band and SATB choir

When I set out to compose my second combined band and choir piece, I went to one of my favorite carols, In Dulci Jubilo. A couple years prior, I was commissioned by Doane College to arrange Ralph Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on Christmas Carols for their Christmas Festival and was asked in 2012 to make some more edits to the piece. My arrangement of In Dulci Jubilo was heavily influenced by the Fantasia, in style, rhythm and transition. Vaughan Williams' flowing style and contrasting lines worked well with the ideas I had, and I was very lucky to have been given that opportunity to improve my own composition.

Vaughan Williams' inspiration brought this piece to life through the Fillmore Central High School Concert Band and Concert Choir on December 13, 2012.

Text

In dulci jubilo, let us our homage show!
Our heart's joy reclineth In praesepio;
And like a bright star shineth Matris in gremio.
Alpha es et O! Alpha es et O!

Good Christian men re-joice with heart and soul and voice!
Give ye heed to what we say: Jesus Christ is born today!
Ox and ass before him bow and he is in the manger now
Christ is born today! Christ is born today!

Good Christian men, rejoice with heart, and soul, and voice!
Now ye need not fear the grave: Jesus Christ was born to save!
Calls you one, and calls you all, to gain His everlasting hall:
Christ was born to save! Christ was born to save!

Good Christian men, rejoice!
Good Christian men, rejoice!

Good Christian men rejoice! with heart, and soul, and voice!
Now ye hear of endless bliss for Jesus Christ was born for this!
He has opened Heaven's door and we are blest forevermore!
Christ was born for this! Christ was born for this!

In dulci jubilo!
Good Christian men rejoice!
Rejoice! Rejoice! Rejoice!
