Composed 2019 for Combined Choir and Concert Band
Jul, jul, strålande jul was premiered on December 16, 2019 by the combined Fillmore Central High School Concert Choir and Concert Band. The original lyrics were written by Edvard Evers and music composed by Gustaf Nordqvist.
The school I teach at hosts foreign exchange students regularly, which is an awesome opportunity for our kids to learn more about the world and for me to learn more about the music of these students’ home countries.
In the 2019-2020 school year our exchange student from Sweden joined our choir, and so I went hunting for Swedish music that we could sing. I came across this traditional Christmas song, sometimes referred to as the Silent Night of Sweden. My favorite recording is this performance by Zero8, a male choir from Stockholm, Sweden. Teaching the Swedish text to my students was a significant challenge for me, but definitely worth it as I love the way the piece turned out.
