Composed 2012 for Combined Choir and Concert Band
Joy to the World was premiered on December 11, 2012 by the combined Fillmore Central High School Concert Choir and Concert Band. The original lyrics and music were written by Isaac Watts
After the great fun of writing and directing my first combined band/choir piece the year before, I decided to tackle one well-known piece instead of creating a mashup. Isaac Watts wrote Joy to the World in 1719, almost 300 years before this arrangement, and I had improvised on the piece countless times at a piano by the time I was ready to start work. The flow came quickly, and features a taste of “Finlandia” (my favorite Sibelius piece) in the middle.
